A blog from our Director of Independence & Wellbeing, Andrew Gray
Every day across Great Places, we see the difference a safe home and the right support can make.
For some people, that means support to move on from homelessness, while for others, it could be help to manage their wellbeing, navigate difficult circumstances, or maintain their independence as they get older. Whatever someone’s situation, supported housing provides far more than a place to live; it provides the support, security and opportunities people need to move forward with confidence.
That’s why we’re proud to support the National Housing Federation’s Supported Housing Week. The week brings together housing providers, partners and communities to shine a light on the value of supported housing and the life changing role it plays for thousands of people across the country. At a time when demand for support continues to grow and public services face increasing pressure, it’s an important opportunity to raise awareness of what supported housing achieves every day, and why these vital services need to be protected and sustainably funded for the future.
Supported housing is sometimes misunderstood as simply providing temporary accommodation, but the reality is much broader than that.
It helps people build the confidence, skills and resilience to live independently and achieve their goals, whatever those may be. Across Great Places, that support reaches people at different stages of life and with different needs, from young people and families to those with additional needs, living with mental health needs or experience of homelessness. We work proactively to prevent crisis, and with those who are currently experiencing crisis. It can also be for older people who want to remain independent for longer. Whatever the circumstances, supported housing provides a strong foundation and tailored support to help people live well and maintain their wellbeing.
There is a great deal of evidence that demonstrates the positive outcomes supported housing has on people’s lives as well as the financial benefits, along with preventing calls on other vital services such as the NHS and Social Care.
At Great Places, I’m fortunate to work alongside such dedicated colleagues and partners who deliver that support every day. Across our schemes and services, they help people overcome challenges, achieve greater independence and build positive futures. Much of that work takes place quietly behind the scenes, but its impact is significant and long lasting.
Throughout this week, we’ll be shining a spotlight on the breadth of our Independence and Wellbeing services. We’ll be highlighting the different service areas, schemes and partnerships that make up our offer, alongside the visits, events and stories that bring their impact to life. Together, they demonstrate the many ways supported housing helps people thrive, while strengthening the communities they’re part of.
As we mark Supported Housing Week, we’re celebrating the people, partnerships and services that make this work possible, while also adding our voice to the conversation about why supported housing should continue to be valued, championed and invested in, now and into the future.
