Can you check a fire door?

This week is national Fire Door Safety Week, and we’re shining a spotlight on the importance of fire doors for keeping you safe in your home, as well as the ways that you can ensure they function correctly.

What makes a door a fire door?

You may have a fire door in your home, and if you live in a block of flats or building with shared or communal space, you certainly will! These are designed to hold back flames and toxic smoke in the event of a fire, which slows down the spread and allows you more time to leave the building (if this is the evacuation plan for your building). Therefore, it’s vital that these doors are well-maintained and not tampered with – and they should never be propped open!

All fire doors should be certified, clearly labelled, and fully close by themselves. We run Fire Risk Assessments on all of our blocks and high rises each year, and our caretakers undertake routine checks on our fire doors – but whilst we have professionals on hand, there’s a few key safety checks that anyone can do at any time. We’ve put together a quick video guide to help you do this:

If you spot something wrong with your fire door, or if you have any questions, please contact our Customer Hub by emailing: customerhub@greatplaces.org.uk or ringing 0300 123 1966 (Monday-Friday 8am-6pm)

You can also email BuildingSafetyandFire@greatplaces.org.uk and a member of our team will be happy to support you.
