Recently, we came together to celebrate the achievements of our Sharon Hayes Development Academy (SHDA) cohort, and what an inspiring event it was!

The celebration was an opportunity to reflect on an incredible journey of learning, growth and development. We’re delighted to share that all the delegates in attendance successfully completed the programme and achieved their ILM Level 3 qualification. This is a fantastic achievement and a testament to the commitment, determination and hard work each individual has shown throughout the programme.

One of the highlights of the event was hearing from the delegates themselves. Through a series of presentations, each group shared their experiences, learning and reflections from the programme. Their stories demonstrated the confidence, resilience and leadership capability that has developed over the course of the Academy and left everyone in the room feeling optimistic about the future.

It was also wonderful to have Total Excellence in the room, who supported the delivery of the programme, alongside colleagues from Southway Housing, who took part in the opportunity and brought valuable perspectives to the programme experience.

Shannon Jones, Communications Officer and SHDA graduate, reflected on what the experience meant to her:

“I feel so proud to have been part of the 2026 Sharon Hayes Development Academy. The programme really allowed me to get into the mind of a manager and leader and provided me with the skills and confidence to implement for when I’m a leader one day. My key takeaway was that leadership starts with self, you need to first understand yourself and the way that you respond to people in order to be a good leader. Self-awareness is everything. The graduation day was amazing, and the emotional speeches were a testament to how brilliant the programme was. I’ve gained not only a Level 3 ILM qualification and skills to take with me, but also a network of amazing people who I am lucky to call my colleagues to keep taking inspiration from.”

Anita Harrison, Neighbourhood Services Manager and SHDA graduate, commented:

“What a great, inspirational course Great Places has implemented for colleagues from ethnically diverse groups.  The course, tutor, special guest speaker, and support from my mentor have given me the confidence to go further in my career path.  The graduation event was very tearful and emotional as I looked around the room, as we had all come so far.  The bond we all had will stay with me forever. Special thanks to Elaine and Jason.”

Jason Casanove, Colleague Experience Business Partner, commented:

“Events like this are a reminder of what makes our sector so special. Housing is built on people, relationships and a shared commitment to making a difference in communities. Seeing talented colleagues come together to learn from one another, challenge themselves and grow  was truly inspiring.”

Congratulations to every SHDA graduate, mentor and supporter who has contributed to the success of this year’s programme. We can’t wait to see what comes next!

We are now scoping what the next cohort will focus on as the SHDA programme evolves each year to focus on groups who may face barriers to progression or inclusion
