Work is set to begin on a new development of 65 affordable homes in Wigan, as Great Places and Stonebond move forward with plans for the Christopher Street site.
Following planning approval, Great Places and Stonebond are preparing to start on site in the coming weeks, bringing a long-vacant brownfield site back into use. Located on the former Christopher Street Depot in Ince, the development will deliver 65 affordable homes, all for social rent, helping to meet local housing need.
The scheme forms part of Great Places and Stonebond’s wider partnership, launched in 2023, to deliver hundreds of new homes across the North West. At Christopher Street, the homes will sit alongside the neighbouring Willowbrook Fields development, where 106 affordable homes are already under construction.
Together, the two sites will provide more than 170 affordable homes, supporting the creation of a larger, well-connected neighbourhood and contributing to the wider regeneration of the area.
Nick Gornall, our Director of Development, said:
We’re pleased to be starting work on site alongside our partners at Stonebond. By bringing this long-standing brownfield site back into use, we’re helping to create a joined-up neighbourhood that will provide high-quality, affordable homes for local people.
This is a strong example of what partnership working can achieve, helping to unlock sites, accelerate delivery and support the long-term regeneration of communities.
The Christopher Street development has been made possible through close partnership working, with support from Homes England funding helping to unlock the site and support delivery.
Once complete, the development will make an important contribution to Wigan’s growth by providing high-quality affordable homes that respond to local need.
