The devastating fire at Clarendon Leisure Centre in May 2024 left a significant gap in youth activities across Seedley Langworthy. In response, the Willow Tree Youth Provision was created, an initiative delivered by Salford Community Leisure (SCL) and proudly supported by Great Places. Over 40 weeks of the academic year, the project has offered a consistent, high‑quality weekly youth club for young people aged 8–16.

Designed to boost physical activity, reduce the risk of anti‑social behaviour and strengthen social networks, the sessions combined structured sport with a welcoming shared food space, which encourage informal wellbeing conversations and peer connection.

“Our aim was to provide a safe, trusted environment where young people could stay active, make friends and build confidence,” said Andrew Kelly, Community Partnership Manager at Great Places.

Engagement has been strong throughout, with 553 attendances from 67 young people, most in Years 3–6. Activities ranged from football and dodgeball to seasonal sports like rugby and tennis, supported by national governing‑body initiatives. Close collaboration with Willow Tree Primary School ensured the club remained visible and accessible, particularly during school transitions.

The impact has been clear and personal. One participant, E, progressed from being withdrawn to confidently joining team sports, while another, M, who has additional needs, developed resilience, independence and strong peer relationships. “It’s been amazing to see young people grow week by week,” Andrew added. “The space has made a real difference in the community.”

With a total project cost of £5,800, the initiative demonstrates excellent value in providing inclusive, community‑based youth support at a crucial time. After attending a recent session himself, Andrew confirmed, “We’re already exploring further opportunities to continue working together”.
