Partnership working has helped secure the future of a much‑loved community hub on Tamworth Street in Oldham, ensuring it remains a safe, welcoming and energy‑efficient space for local people.
Tamworth Street is home to the Werneth and Freehold Community Development Project (WFCDP), a long‑established local charity that has supported children, families and adults in the area since 1991. The building is managed by Plumlife Management.
When essential repairs were identified, Great Places worked closely with Plumlife, Jackson‑Jackson contractors and the staff at Tamworth Street to plan and deliver a programme of improvements that met the needs of both the building and the community it serves. The project was led by Contract Delivery Officer Martin Hogan, who coordinated delivery and partnership working throughout.
Recognising the vital role the centre plays locally, Great Places funded and carried out the works to help safeguard the building’s long‑term future while maintaining its character and heritage.
The improvements included major roof, brickwork and drainage repairs to protect the fabric of the building, alongside measures to improve energy efficiency, weatherproofing and comfort. Fire‑safety upgrades, improved access routes and the removal of external trip hazards have also enhanced safety and accessibility for everyone who uses the centre.
These works will help ensure Tamworth Street remains a reliable base for the wide range of services delivered by WFCDP, including early years provision through its two Panda pre‑schools, youth and community activities, wellbeing support, and training and employment pathways for adults.
Commenting on the completed works, Yvonne Burtonwood, Community Centre Manager at Tamworth Street, said:
“We would like to sincerely thank Great Places for their support in improving the appearance of the building, increasing energy efficiency, and helping us create a more welcoming space for everyone who uses it.”
The improvements will enable WFCDP’s team of staff and volunteers to continue working with residents to co‑produce services, tackle health inequalities and help people of all ages learn, work and thrive within their community.
