Great Places has supported long-term customer Denise Downes through a life-changing move that has transformed her independence, wellbeing and connection to the community.
Denise had lived in her Crumpsall flat for more than 23 years, but as her mobility and health declined, her home was no longer meeting her needs. Recognising this, the Independence and Wellbeing team stepped in to explore suitable housing options that would help her remain safe, independent and closer to the support of her family.
Working closely with Denise, Housing & Contracts Officer Beth Leventhall led a tailored plan to help her relocate to a more appropriate property, one that would remove the barriers she was facing day-to-day. Through Great Places’ commitment to making housing work for customers at every stage of life, Denise was successfully transferred to Openshaw Court, an over-55s scheme in Swinton.
This move was not just about housing but about opportunity, independence and connection. Denise’s new flat offers level access, a walk-in shower and the comfort of being near her family, who all live locally in Swinton. The location means she can now be supported when needed, reduce her taxi costs significantly, and enjoy being able to help pick up her young niece from school.
The change has also opened new social opportunities. At Openshaw Court, Denise has already made new friends and is joining in with scheme activities, something she wasn’t always able to do due to feeling isolated in her previous home.
And this particular move holds a special emotional connection: Denise’s mum once worked as a warden across Great Places’ over‑55s schemes in Salford, including Openshaw Court itself. Thanks to the coordinated efforts of our team, Denise has now returned to a place that was once a big part of her family’s life.
Denise shared how transformative the move has been for her:
“I love my new home. This move has impacted on my mental and physical health in a way that I never thought possible. I look forward to each day and I love being near to my family. I hope this will now be my home for life, I have made new friends and my family visit often as they are local. Openshaw Court and the flat meet all my needs and I feel very happy and safe here and my family no longer worry about me being on my own and struggling.”
Reflecting on the journey, Beth shared her pride in supporting Denise through such a significant transition and seeing the positive impact of the move.
“I have known Denise for many years through my role as Housing and Contracts Officer. Having been aware of her mobility difficulties and the fact she was living in an upstairs flat, I had been discussing with Denise various rehousing options, including adapting her old flat. However, knowing that all her family live in Swinton, who she has very close connections with, I suggested she think about over‑55s accommodation, which I knew would be ideal for her. I immediately knew that Openshaw Court would be perfect due to the flats being suitable for her needs, the location near to her family, and belonging to a community so she is no longer isolated.”
