A group of Blackburn customers have been getting closer to nature thanks to a communal gardening project.

Great Places helped to secure £9000 in Lottery funding, thanks to Community Partnership Manager Aateeka Bashir, which was used to buy a host of items including a greenhouse, planters, plants, tools etc at Bowland House.

The greenhouse was installed at the rear of the building and customers, namely Julie Redhead-Cook, Karen Williams, Dee Connell and Jackie Impey, along with NSM Anthony Chantler, Caretaker Scott Holt and Aateeka, have been busy growing herbs and vegetables as well as placing planters around the building to brighten up their homestead.

And thank to a little help from another Great Places customer from Thornton-Cleveleys, Jeff Darwell, the project has gone from strength to strength.

The Bowland customers went to visit Jeff’s garden and talk through the process. Then Jeff visited Blackburn to provide support with the project.

Customers have reported that the project has transformed the grounds into a vibrant space, has had a positive impact on customers’ mental health, provided healthy home grown products to help reduce food costs and has helped create a sense of community and wellbeing.
