Step into running: Boosting health and confidence in Rochdale

A community initiative in Rochdale is helping residents take their first steps toward better health, thanks to a social value fund donation from Great Places.

The ‘Step into Running’ programme, developed by Become United was designed to break down barriers to fitness and make running accessible to everyone, regardless of background or ability. With support from Great Places, the project delivered a 4-week beginner-friendly running course that welcomed 40 participants across various locations in Rochdale.

Led by professional coaches and supported by volunteers, the sessions included warm-ups, drills, running/walking intervals, and group reflections. The programme also offered guidance on safe training, refreshments, and a WhatsApp group to keep participants connected and motivated.

Before this programme I had never run in my life. Now I feel more confident and motivated to keep going. The group made me feel welcome and encouraged me every step of the way.

Rohima, 25

Participants reported significant improvements in physical fitness, mental wellbeing, and confidence. 85% said they now feel confident running outside the programme, and 100% expressed interest in continuing with outdoor activities like hiking and nature walks.

Thanks to Great Places and the dedication of local coaches and volunteers, Step into Running has laid the foundation for a healthier, more connected Rochdale.
