Russell Road reaches new milestones as Kindred House and Chorus take shape

Work on our Russell Road development in Whalley Range has reached a number of important milestones, bringing two exciting housing projects a step closer to completion.
Construction is continuing at Kindred House, the UK’s first purpose-built majority LGBTQ+ Extra Care housing scheme, with roof works now underway. Once complete, the development will provide 80 affordable social rent homes for LGBTQ+ people and allies aged 55 and over, helping residents live independently in a safe, supportive and inclusive community.
The start of roof works marks a significant step forward, enabling the building to become watertight ahead of winter and allowing internal works to continue progressing.
Kindred House is being delivered through a unique partnership between Great Places, Manchester City Council, LGBT Foundation and the Russell Road Community Steering Group. Together, they have worked to ensure the development reflects the needs and aspirations of future residents.
In recent months, members of the Community Steering Group have been helping shape the design of communal spaces and have started work on a Community Agreement that will help define the values, culture and ethos of the future community.
Alongside progress at Kindred House, preparations are also underway for the launch of Chorus, a collection of 40 shared ownership apartments being delivered through Plumlife Homes at Lavender House.
The homes remain on track for completion before Christmas, with the official sales launch planned for September. The development will provide more affordable routes into home ownership, helping create a diverse and thriving mixed-tenure community at Russell Road.
The project was recently showcased at Pride on the Range, helping raise awareness of Kindred House and the pioneering approach being taken to deliver inclusive housing. Community Steering Group members have also been nominated for a Best of Manchester Award, recognising their commitment and contribution to shaping the development.
With construction progressing well across both projects, Russell Road continues to demonstrate how partnership working, co-production and community involvement can help deliver homes where people feel welcome, valued and able to thrive.
