At Great Places, we are proud to support our customers and communities through practical, confidence‑building learning opportunities. Our latest one‑day Introduction to Barista Skills and Customer Service course, developed by the Great Places Training and Skills Academy, is a great example of how targeted training can open doors.

Designed and delivered by our Training and Skills team, this introductory course focuses on core barista techniques alongside essential customer service skills. It is part of our wider pre‑recruitment programme, created to help learners take positive steps towards employment without the pressure of formal qualifications. While this first session was exclusively open to Independent Living & Wellbeing customers, the course will soon be available to all Great Places customers and the wider community, including other registered providers.

Two learners attended the pilot session, and their feedback highlighted both the practical and personal impact of the day. Millie, 22, described the experience as “very educational and interactive”, adding, “I have had fun whilst learning a new skill that will benefit me in future jobs.” She also valued the hands‑on experience, noting that it provided “practical experience with a machine used in many cafes.”

For Sarah, 44, the supportive environment made all the difference. “Enjoyable and relaxed – as I have anxiety, staff were understanding and supportive,” she shared, explaining that she “learnt a lot” and that this course gave her “confidence to do more training  in the future.”

Hidie Taylor, Training & Skills Lead, explains why this approach matters: “Many of our customers have been out of education for many years and are unsure how to enter the employment market. Our pre‑recruitment courses teach baseline skills while building confidence and self‑esteem.”

With our next Barista course running on 30 April and further opportunities planned, including a five‑day Working with Children course in Salford starting on 20 April, Great Places remains committed to helping people develop skills, confidence and brighter futures.
