Despite a rainy start to the day, customers of Rushford, Hopkins and Hatton Street in Northmoor came together for a community-led clean-up event, supported by Great Places and Manchester City Council. The initiative aimed to prepare the area for winter and lay the groundwork for a larger alleyway planting event planned for Easter.

Armed with wellies, gloves and plenty of determination, customers and volunteers tackled weeds, mud and litter, transforming their shared spaces into cleaner, more welcoming environments. Volunteers also helped install benches, creating new spots for neighbours to rest and connect.

The event was coordinated by the customers with Great Places’ support, led by Megan Croft (Neighbourhood Services Manager). Other help by Great Places came from Pete Crean, (Community Partnership Manager) and Nicole Henry (Neighbourhood Services Officer), who volunteered on the day along with Mike Glennon (Head of Neighbourhoods), who popped down to lend a helping hand.

Ben Hayes (Apprentice Electrician) joined too,  being a huge help in putting up the new pallets ahead of new planting for next year.

Guy Cresswell, Executive Director of Customer Services, also visited to speak with customers and see the impact of their efforts first-hand.

Manchester City Council also played a key role, providing volunteers and practical support to help bring the event to life.

On the day, Megan Croft said:

“I really enjoyed supporting the customers in bringing their vision to life, the passion they have for their community is second to none and its very inspiring to see. It just goes to show that with that and a little coordination, community spaces really can be brought to life. Huge thanks to everyone that came down to support us, especially Nicole Henry (Neighbourhood Services Officer) who has only been with us two weeks but had no hesitation to get stuck in! I shall look forward to the next event planned for Easter, when we can implement more planting and colour so customers can enjoy the space in the summer time as a community”.

Guy Cresswell said:

“It’s inspiring to see customers taking such pride in their neighbourhood. Their energy and commitment show what’s possible when communities and partners work together. We’re proud to support them and look forward to seeing what they achieve next.”
