Over the past two years, Great Places has supported the Bolton Manbassadors Football group, now one of the most impactful community projects helping men across Bolton improve their wellbeing, confidence and social connection.

When the free sessions first launched, turnout was low. Many men felt that because the sessions were linked to mental health support, they “weren’t for them.” But once that stigma eased, interest grew quickly. Men of all ages, backgrounds, cultures and experiences began joining, many of them had never accessed support before. As participant Aftab said:

I never knew I needed this until I came here.

Men attend for different reasons – combatting isolation, rebuilding routine after Covid, staying active during the cost‑of‑living crisis, improving physical health, and boosting mental wellbeing in a more relaxed environment. The football pitch provides a space for natural “shoulder‑to‑shoulder” conversations, where men can talk when they’re ready without pressure.

Behind the group are powerful personal stories, including men recovering from unemployment, isolation, addiction, bereavement, neurodiversity challenges and family stress. For many, the group has become a lifeline.

When Manbassadors first approached Great Places, space was limited to just one 7‑a‑side pitch, meaning men had to be turned away or put on a rota. Great Places funding allowed the programme to expand to three additional pitches, meaning:

The group now has 95 registered members

Beyond football, the group now attends Bolton Wonders FC games together, goes on tours, and even organises its own Christmas celebrations. Their appreciation was shown when they won the Bolton Business Awards 2025 ‘Heart of the Community’ thanks to nominations from the men themselves.

The Bolton Manbassadors Team and all 95 participants said:

Thank you, Great Places. Your funding has made all the difference, especially for the men who needed this support the most.
