Could switching energy tariff help you save this winter?
From 1 October, the energy price cap will rise by 4% for a typical household paying by Direct Debit for gas and electricity. If you are on a standard variable or default tariff, this means an increase of around £5 a month, depending on how much energy you use.
Now could be a good time to check your current deal and compare tariffs from your supplier and across the market (search for ‘ofgem approved comparison sites’). Some fixed tariffs may be cheaper than the new capped rates and can give you more certainty about the price you pay per unit, but savings are not guaranteed. Compare unit rates and standing charges using your annual energy use, and check the tariff length and any exit fees before switching.
Choose the option that best suits your household, whether that means fixing your prices or staying on a flexible tariff. If you are struggling to pay your bills, contact your energy supplier as soon as possible—they must work with you to agree an affordable way forward and explain what support may be available.
