Young people in Longridge enjoyed an active and fun-filled summer thanks to a series of free StreetSports sessions delivered by Macclesfield FC and supported by Great Places.

The programme welcomed between 12 and 15 children at each of the four summer holiday sessions, giving young people aged 7 to 16 the opportunity to take part in a range of free sports activities in a safe, inclusive and welcoming environment.

Delivered by qualified coaches from Macclesfield FC, the sessions encouraged children of all abilities to get active, learn new skills, build confidence and make new friends. Activities were designed to be accessible to everyone, with a focus on having fun and promoting positive wellbeing through sport.

The success of the summer programme has led to the launch of a new after-school provision, with free weekly sessions taking place on Monday evenings throughout the autumn term at St Helena’s Field in Longridge.

The sessions have been promoted through local schools, social media channels and community networks to ensure as many young people as possible can benefit from the opportunity.

Great Places Community Partnership Manager, Andrew Kelly, said:

“We are delighted to bring the StreetSports programme to Longridge. These free sessions are all about creating opportunities for young people to be active, have fun and build positive friendships in a safe and welcoming environment.

Working alongside Macclesfield FC’s excellent coaching team, we want to ensure every child has the chance to take part, develop confidence and enjoy the physical and social benefits that sport can offer. We are thrilled with the positive response to the summer sessions and look forward to seeing even more local children get involved during the autumn programme.”

The after-school sessions continue the successful “turn up and play” format, offering boys and girls aged 7 to 16 the chance to enjoy football, games and other sports activities without any cost or previous experience required.

By supporting initiatives such as StreetSports, Great Places is helping to create stronger communities, providing opportunities for young people to stay active, connect with others and enjoy positive experiences close to home.

Anyone interested in attending can simply turn up to the sessions and get involved. Whether they are keen footballers or just looking for a fun way to spend time after school, all young people are welcome every Monday (17:30-19:00) at St Helena’s Field, WA16 8PA.

Macclesfield FC and Great Places Housing Group look forward to welcoming more local children and families throughout the autumn term.
