Candle Fire Safety Week took place last month, but with the festive season on the way, and the nights slowly drawing in, it’s always worth a reminder to take good care when decorating our homes with candles.
Candle safety might sound obvious – but did you know that candles are actually the leading cause of all house fires? Accidents do happen, so here are a few tips to help you ensure your safety this Autumn and Winter…
- Put your candles or tea lights in snug-fitting holders on heat-resistant surfaces;
- Distance! It’s also recommended to leave a 30cm space around your candle.
- Also make sure there’s more than a meter between your candles or tea lights and any surface above;
- Make sure all candles are completely extinguished before you go to bed or if you go out – never leave lit candles unattended;
- Place candles away from curtains and out of any draughts;
- Keep candles well out of reach of small children and pets;
- As always, ensure you have a working smoke and heat alarm in your home.
