As energy costs continue to impact many households, there are schemes available that could help with your heating and electricity bills this winter. Our Financial Resilience Team wants to make sure you’re aware of the support that may be available to you.

Winter fuel payment 2026/2027

If you were born before 28 June 1960, you could receive between £100 and £300 to help towards your heating costs during winter 2026/2027 through the Winter Fuel Payment scheme.

Most eligible people will receive this payment automatically. If you qualify, you’ll usually receive a letter in October or November 2026 confirming how much you’ll get.

The amount you receive depends on your date of birth and your circumstances during the qualifying week, which runs from 21 to 27 September 2026.

Payments are expected to be made during November or December 2026, and any money you receive will not affect any other benefits you may be claiming.

Warm Home Discount scheme

You may also be able to get help through the Warm Home Discount Scheme, which provides a one-off £150 discount on your electricity bill.

The discount is applied directly by your electricity supplier, so the money is not paid to you separately.

In most cases, eligible households receive the discount automatically.

In England, you may qualify if you:
