Great Places recently joined forces with Onward Homes, the Salford Health Improvement Team, and the SUEZ Bike Recycling Project to deliver a community initiative that’s already making a difference in Higher Broughton, Salford.

On an event last month, we came together to provide free refurbished bikes and a bike repair service for children and families living in one of Salford’s most economically disadvantaged neighbourhoods. The event was designed to promote social mobility, sustainable travel and health and wellbeing, core values we’re proud to champion.

Thanks to the incredible work of SUEZ, who upcycle bikes from local tips at their Trafford warehouse, we were able to distribute 26 refurbished bikes to local children. Their expert “bike doctor” team also repaired 9 existing bikes, helping even more young people get back on the road safely.

For many families, the cost of a bike can be a barrier. This initiative helped remove that obstacle, giving children the chance to explore their neighbourhood, stay active and build confidence.

The Salford Health Improvement Team added a vital wellbeing element to the day, offering free health checks for parents and carers, and promoting weekly cycle rides in the area. It was a fantastic way to encourage whole-family health and get residents excited about staying active together.

This event is a shining example of what can be achieved when housing providers, local services, and sustainability champions work hand-in-hand to improve our communities.
