Our approach to flags

Great Places Housing Group is committed to fostering communities where everyone feels safe, valued and included. Inclusion is not just a principle – it’s central to everything we do.  Over the past few months, we’ve seen an increase in the number of flags displayed in our communities, which in some cases has led to concerns and questions.

To help ensure that it is done in a way that respects everyone in our communities, here are some helpful points to consider when you are thinking about displaying a flag.

Things to consider:

  • Where is it going? Flags displayed within your home or garden are generally fine, but we do not allow flags to be displayed in communal areas or shared spaces including lounges, stairwells and external spaces.
  • Safety is key: For health and safety reasons, we’re unable to approve permanent flag poles. It’s also important that flags don’t block pathways or create fire risks. If you have any queries, please get in touch with us to get clarity.
  • Lampposts, benches etc: Flags should not be put up on any external structures such as lampposts, streetlights, camera columns or benches.

You can display flags:

Inside your home – such as behind a window, providing they:

  • do not include offensive or inflammatory content
  • do not break any planning restrictions

On private balconies or windows, if they:

  • do not include offensive or inflammatory content
  • are securely fixed and not at risk of falling
  • do not cause damage to the building
  • do not break fire safety guidance or planning restrictions or any terms of your tenancy
  • do not breach lease or freeholder terms

Shared spaces

To keep shared areas safe and inclusive, there are some places where flags or symbols can never be displayed.

Please don’t place flags:

  • in shared internal or external areas such as corridors, stairwells or communal gardens and balconies
  • on lampposts, railings or other public fixtures
  • in places where they pose a fire, safety or access risk
  • where they may create division or cause distress in the community.

If you have any concerns:

Great Places is proud to be an anti-racist, multicultural organisation. We believe our customers and colleagues should be respected in the places they live and work. We trust our customers and colleagues to be responsible and respectful at all times.

If we receive a complaint about aggressive or offensive messages in any form, including where it is in the form of wording on flags, graffiti or vandalism, we will investigate and take appropriate action in line with our colleague policies and customers’ lease or tenancy agreements.

Complaints

If we receive a complaint about a customer displaying aggressive or offensive messages in any form, we will need to investigate and check that this does not breach their tenancy agreement.
