Customers at Great Places’ Cornish Close scheme in Manchester are benefiting from an additional £32k worth of improvement works that will help make the scheme more accessible and allow vulnerable customers to remain in their homes for longer.

The scheme is owned by Great Places with on-site support provided by our Partner Agency “Turning Point”, a social enterprise which delivers specialist community, residential, supported living, respite, educational and day opportunities services for adults with learning disabilities, autism, mental health, and complex needs. Cornish Close consists of five bungalows and there are staff on-site 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Understanding our customers and adapting our services and properties to meet their changing needs is a key priority for Great Places. Cornish Close customers benefited from some planned improvement works to their homes earlier this year to improve to the facilities, appearance and safety measures at the scheme. This included installing new kitchens, bathrooms including adaptions and new specialist hoist systems. Plus a upgraded fire alarm system.

The last phase of the improvement work was completed in spring 2023. John Rosler, a Contracts Surveyor at Great Places, said: “In total, we renewed the kitchens in all five properties, with input from the residents and colleagues on choices. There are a total of seven bathrooms spread across the five properties, and all seven were renewed. Three were done as wet rooms and the remaining four were fitted with new specialist baths. We also replaced some of the existing track hoists and install new hoists as well. The customers were very happy with the work.”

The Turning Point colleagues that manage the scheme were also delighted with the improvements, and they worked closely with the contractors carrying out the work to ensure minimal disruption for customers.

During the initial renovation work it was also identified that there were further improvements to accessibility that would help our customers to live in their current properties for longer. We have now raised an additional £32k for improvement work, will be jointly funded through Great Places’ aids and adaptations budget and Manchester City Council’s Disabled Facilities Grant. It will be spent on improving accessibility as well as mitigating fire risks by installing new patio doors to the bedrooms.

If you or someone living with you has a disability or is struggling to live independently, we may be able to help you adapt your home to make everyday tasks easier. It is important that we understand your unique circumstances and that you keep us informed of changes to health, mobility and any additional requirements you may have.

Our “You Share, We Shape” campaign will be launching soon and is all about us understanding your personal needs and identifying areas where we can better support you.
