“I like keeping busy – I always have. I was a Steward Representative with my union as a working member and now I’m involved with the retired members. Our focus is to obtain better working conditions for employees as well as to support people living with disabilities. I’m also a School Governor and Trustee with an Education Trust, an active member of an arthritis support group, who I raise funds for, and a volunteer at Great Places.
“The decision to start volunteering was an easy one. Over the years I’ve sat on the Senior Tenants Voice forum, the Customer Scrutiny Group and the Tenants Committee in Blackpool, all of which provided me with invaluable experience that has helped me in the above roles.
“I’ve gained skills in housing management, GDPR and property voids, alongside learning a great deal about how housing associations work and the number of different departments needed to keep everything ticking over.
“I feel much more confident representing people, especially those who may be more vulnerable since I started volunteering at Great Places. However, the thing I’m most proud of is my ability to ask questions without being afraid. This is something I struggled with before I started my volunteering journey."
