At Great Places, volunteering is an important aspect of the work we do to support our customers and communities and not only is it a fantastic opportunity to give back to those in need, but it can also be a stepping-stone into employment for many. With Volunteers Week coming to a close, we are keen to share more about opportunities available with organisations we are supporting in our regions.

Great Friends

The Great Friends scheme was set up by our Community Investment Team as a way to provide emotional support for local residents in GM North. The main focus is for customers to support one another through befriending calls to help those struggling with loneliness or isolation, especially as a result of the pandemic. All volunteers receive full training and a starter pack to ensure they have all the necessary information to guide them in their role, and any costs associated with this scheme are covered by Great Places.

Food Works Sheffield

The Food Works Farm focuses on growing sustainable, fresh produce for local communities in Sheffield. They aim to produce food that is accessible for all and grown in a way that is less damaging to the environment. Great Places has been supporting Food Works through the Community Resilience Fund and now the group are looking for volunteers to help with sowing, planting and maintenance of the farm.

Knutsford Grow

Knutsford GROW (Garden Regeneration Over Ward) are responsible for maintaining the gardens of residents who are unable to do so themselves around the Knutsford area. Volunteers with the group are given one-to-one support from a volunteers coordinator and are offered the opportunity to gain a Horticulture Training Diploma whilst working with the group.

Morecambe Food Pantry

The Morecambe Food Pantry is currently looking for volunteers to support with a wide range of work including stocking the pantry, checking produce as well as chatting to and supporting customers who attend the scheme. Volunteers are needed particularly for Fridays between 2pm and 7pm.

If you are interested in any of the opportunities above or are looking for different experience in a volunteering position, please get in touch by completing our volunteering opportunities form here or emailing community.investment@greatplaces.org.uk with your name, contact details, area and what you are interested in.

We want to thank all those who have volunteered or continue to volunteer in the community for their incredible efforts.
