This week is Communities that Work week. The campaign, led by Give Us A Chance of which Great Places is a proud member, seeks to raise awareness for the work that the social housing sector does to help people into employment.
The UK’s social housing sector is one of the largest investors in tackling unemployment in the social housing sector. Housing associations alone invest around £70m a year in employment and training support programmes – £60m of this is from their own funding. But the social housing sector doesn’t always get the recognition it deserves. The Communities that Work campaign, aims to show national and local government the true scale of social housing’s investment into employment-related services, and outline how government can do more to work with the social housing sector to close the customer employment gap.
The Community Investment team leads Great Places work in this area in helping us fulfil our corporate ambition of To help at least 2,000 people gain employment, enter training or become Volunteers by 2021.
Jess is just one of the people whose life the team has helped to transform by supporting her to set up her own business. You can watch her story below.
- Last year the team:
- Supported 880 households in to work, training or volunteering
- Helped almost 180 people in to full or part-time employment
- Provided over 270 people with business start up advice
- Drew down more than £1 million in external funds to deliver community projects
