Great Places recently welcomed Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham to its award-winning Docherty Project in Rusholme, to see first-hand how its specialist Independence & Wellbeing scheme is supporting people experiencing homelessness alongside alcohol dependency.
During the visit, the Mayor met customers and colleagues to learn how the project helps individuals regain stability and independence. He toured the main building, which offers seven bedsits and seven flats with 24-hour support, and heard about the wider network of homes across Rusholme, Fallowfield, and Moss Side, which together provide accommodation for 35 individuals.

The Docherty Project is one of the country’s few specialist alcohol harm-reduction services. Commissioned by Manchester City Council and delivered by Great Places, it provides short-term accommodation and tailored support for those who are not ready or able to follow abstinence-based pathways. Through drink management plans, wellbeing strategies, and resettlement services, the project empowers customers to reduce alcohol harm, maintain independence, and move on into permanent housing.
The visit also highlighted the critical role of supported housing, in easing the pressure on health and social care providers through Great Places’ Independence & Wellbeing services. As a proud supporter of the National Housing Federation’s ‘Save Our Supported Housing’ campaign, Great Places continues to call for long-term investment in these essential services, which ease pressure on health and social care systems and help people achieve independence.
Commenting on the visit, Mayor Andy Burnham said:
“Tackling homelessness is one of the greatest challenges we face, and it requires both compassion and practical solutions. The Docherty Project demonstrates the impact of combining safe housing with specialist support. This approach gives people a stable foundation and the opportunity to rebuild their lives, breaking the cycle of homelessness.”

Alison Dean, Chief Executive of Great Places, added:
“We were delighted to welcome Mayor Burnham and highlight the incredible work of our team at The Docherty Project. Providing safe and supportive housing options for the most vulnerable members of our communities is essential. This scheme reflects our commitment to tackling homelessness and highlights the strength of partnership working and the importance of person-centred support in achieving lasting change.”
