Accessibility

We are aim to ensure the Great Places website is as accessible as possible for all. To assist all users we aim to meet the WAI WCAG 2.1 A (Single A) standard for the majority of our content and operations on this site. The WCAG standard helps ensure that websites are:

  • Perceivable – information and interfaces are presented in a way that users can perceive. This includes ensuring that content is accessible to people using assistive technologies and ensuring that interfaces and information can be understood by people including (but not limited to) ensuring colour contrast, making sure that information conveyed in images can be accessed in other textual ways or is explained in ALT text, videos have subtitles, content can reflow and is still understandable on mobile devices without horizontal scrolling.
  • Operable – ensuring the website can be operated by users. This includes allowing for navigation and operation of pages using a keyboard, making sure that a user can navigate to content easily and in a number of ways, that page titles are present and describe the purpose of the page, that content is ordered and titled appropriately, button targets are large and easy to access.
  • Understandable – ensuring the website content can be understood by users. This includes ensuring the content is readable and that any acronyms and abbreviations are explained, webpages and operations appear to users in a predictable way given their experience on the website (ie buttons, forms, navigation and layout is consistent in look, feel and how it works), assistance is given during operations of forms or inputs to help users.
  • Robust – ensuring the website works with a variety of devices and technologies which includes ensuring the coding of the site and the content is valid and conforms to standards.

Whilst it is our aim to ensure all content adheres to the highest standards of accessibility, there are occasions where this may not be possible.

Downloads and PDF files

We sometimes use PDF files on this website. Most modern devices already have a PDF reader installed. Due to the nature of some of these documents or files, they may not always meet all accessibility guidelines. Where this information impacts our customers directly, we will provide a webpage accessible version of the content in the first instance with an option for a PDF download if required. Where information is primarily aimed at a specific audience that requires a PDF version, we will provide it in this format.

Legacy PDF documents will not necessarily be converted into web pages or available in an accessible format.
