There was much excitement at the Welcome Café, following a royal visit from the Duchess of Gloucester. The VIP joined members of the community at a partners’ lunch to present the prestigious Queen’s Award for Volunteering.
The Welcome Cafe is a multi-purpose centre offering a wide range of activities, services and support to the people of the Longridge and Shaw Heath neighbourhood, managed by Great Places Housing Group. The café itself sits at the heart of this operation and acts as a central hub for the community, providing hearty and affordable meals. It can be a lifeline for many people, and often provides families with their one hot meal a meal a day.
The visit was a great success, and after the Duchess presented the award she spent valuable time talking to volunteers, customers and community members.
Clare Watkins, a neighbourhood co-ordinator for Great Places Housing Group, which works with The Welcome Café in a variety of community activities and initiatives said: ‘Winning this award is a fantastic achievement for The Welcome Cafe, and valuable recognition for all of the fantastic work that is done here.
“The Duchess was very pleasant and spoke to many different people during her visit. She seemed genuinely interested in the good work we do and was interested to learn just how many people use the venue for various groups, meetings and lunches. It was a brilliant experience for everyone involved!”
