Wybourn, Sheffield came together with local organisations on Saturday 25 February
to plant a community orchard.
The event was hosted by Great Places Housing Group, who worked in
partnership with Grow Sheffield and Trees for Cities with support from Best
Start, Manor and Castle Development Trust and South
Yorkshire Rehabilitation Company to develop the previously disused space.
were consulted on the best way to transform the site, and they fed back that
they wanted an outdoor space where local families could grow healthy food,
which could also be used for education and play.
In spite of
the weather, eleven trees were planted at Saturday’s event, which was attended
by a number of local families. Parents and children were able to get their
hands dirty and plant their own fruit trees with help from Grow Sheffield, who
were on hand to offer advice on maintaining the orchard for future generations.
Walker, Community Development Coordinator at Great Places, said: “We had a
fantastic turn out at Saturday’s event and the feedback has been superb. We
would like to thank all our customers who fed back their ideas during the
consultation phase of this project, and of course everyone who came down to
battle Storm Doris and plant a tree on Saturday.
“We hope the orchard will be
used for play, recreation and growing delicious ingredients for years to come!”
